PESA and MESA access sperm in the epididymis, using needle aspiration or a microsurgical approach. TESA and TESE access the testis, using aspiration or tissue extraction. The technique is selected for a specific clinical situation.

Retrieval may be considered when sperm cannot be obtained in the ejaculate. A reproductive team explains how it fits with assisted reproduction and whether other assessment is needed.
Questions to take to your consultation
Ask why retrieval is being considered, the alternatives, anaesthesia, recovery and how retrieved sperm would be used or stored. Finding sperm and achieving pregnancy are separate outcomes; neither is guaranteed.
